5 Things You Must Do Before Moving Out of Your Home

about parks quality moving

Are you planning to move sometime soon? When it comes to moving, your biggest challenge isn’t getting everything in boxes. It’s organizing everything that comes along with the moving experience before your big day. Thankfully, we cover essential things to do before you move. Add them to your checklist, and let’s plan ahead together.

5 Key Things to Do Before You Move

Boxes? Check. Tape? Check.
You have your packing materials, but first, let’s tie up some loose ends!

1. Forward Your Mail to the New Address

The last thing you want is an important check or bill to show up at your old house after you move. Make it a point to plan ahead by scheduling your mail to forward through the United States Post Office (USPS).
This step is easy and can be done online ahead of time for a minimal fee. Simply fill out the change of address form, including the mailing address for your new location and the date in which you want to start forwarding your mail.

2. Plan the Transition for Your Services and Utilities

Next, make a list of all the utilities and services you’re currently using, including:

  • Electricity
  • Water
  • Cable
  • Internet
  • Trash
  • Landscaping
  • House Insurance
  • Car Insurance
  • And More

Depending on where you’re moving to, you may need to either cancel or transfer your services accordingly. Like USPS, most of these service providers can plan in advance if you give them your moving date ahead of time.
Likewise, you’ll want to schedule the setup for your new services at your new location. This will help narrow any service gaps between residences, making your move that much smoother.

3. Create a Move-In Kit of Essentials

Moving is quite an ordeal, no matter how organized you are. As you’re packing your belongings, make sure to put together a separate kit with all of the essentials.
This kit includes basic toiletries, a set of clothes, cleaning supplies, food, medication, and whatever you feel you may need if you beat your moving company to the new house or don’t feel up to unpacking everything immediately. Your essentials will be handy and available.

4. Organize Your Moving Boxes Before Pickup

Once everything is packed, organize your boxes for easy moving and storage. Organizing will save both you and your moving team time! Arrange your boxes with the knowledge that what goes on first, comes off last.
Label your boxes by room and make it clear if certain items are fragile. If you want your movers to quickly know which boxes go in what rooms, color code the boxes with stickers you place on the doors within your new home.
This will help streamline the packing and unpacking processes.

5. Clean the House One Last Time

After everything is packed, you’ll probably find certain areas have been neglected over the years. These areas include behind or beneath heavy furniture and appliances. Go the extra mile by giving your home one last good clean.
Plan accordingly by leaving out a few cleaning supplies to tackle the task.
Not only will the next tenants or owners thank you, but you also may find items you might have overlooked.

In a couple of weeks, my girlfriend is going to be hiring a moving company to help her get out of her parent’s house and into a new apartment. I thought it was very helpful when you explained that it is a good idea to fill out a change of address form before you completely move out. I will make sure that my girlfriend knows to forward her mail as soon as possible.

My family and I are planning to move to a new home by November, which is why we’re looking for a long-distance mover that may help transport our belongings safely. It’s a great thing that you shared here the advantage of putting together a separate kit that includes basic toiletries, a set of clothes, cleaning supplies, food, and medication. We’ll also keep in mind to label our boxes so it will be easier to organize the things.
